Do you feel like there are clothes in your wardrobe which you just don’t wear often enough because they’re only appropriate for out of office? Like your favourite crop top. Exposing my belly button is not appropriate, regardless of how relaxed the dress code is. Or wearing a sleeveless dress or top and exposing your shoulders could be a no-no in some offices.
I sometimes feel like I’ve wasted my money simply because I don’t wear these clothes enough. So I’ve been thinking lately of different ways to style these gorgeous out-of-office clothes for the office.
Here are 20 modern work outfit ideas with out-of-office clothes which you can wear to work. An added bonus is that this makes them the perfect day to night outfits!
Crop Tops
Your favourite deep plunge or sleeveless crop top which you wear all summer, a crop jumper … These needn’t be reserved for out of office looks only. Here are some ideas on how to wear them to work:
- If it’s a wrap crop top, wear with a high waist skirt or trousers to that your belly is not exposed. Just make sure you wrap the top around the waistline of the skirt/trousers.
- Layer a crop top on a white shirt. Paired with an elegant pair of slim-fit trousers makes it a neither too bold, nor boring outfit.
Sleeveless or Deep Plunge Summer Tops
Just like crop tops, sleeveless or deep plunge tops can be styled for the office too. Here are two ways I’ve styled this beautiful sleeveless/strapless top for the office. In the first look, I layered it on a white button-up shirt. In the second I wore it under a jacket and belted both to create a peplum effect on the waist. The first look is bolder. But the second you can wear to work regardless of how conservative your company’s dress code is.
And does anybody know who the lady below is? I love how she styled her deep plunge sleeveless chiffon top layered on a white shirt. Super cute and chic!
And of course, the style queen Olivia Palermo layered an embellished top underneath a shirt adding texture and glamour to the otherwise plain white button-up.
Mini skirt
I came across this layering post recently and I’ve been obsessed with the idea of layering a skirt over a dress or pants. Would you do wear your office skirt this way? I think the below looks are all office appropriate. A little bit bold but who doesn’t like a bold office look?
Sleeveless Summer Dress
Although a sleeveless dress could be office appropriate, you may want to hide some of the skin, depending on your office environment. Wear it with a light chiffon scarf over the shoulders in the summer. Such a chic way to scarf your style too!. Or with a layered shirt or jumper (I prefer polo neck to cover the dress neckline) for a warm and stylish winter office outfit.
Layered Maxi dress
If you think you can only wear your favourite maxi dress to the beach or for cocktails on a warm summer night, think again! There are many ways to style it for more formal environment too. Wear it with a blazer for a smart casual spring or fall outfit. Or layer a matching colour polo neck jumper – an easy summer to autumn transition outfit idea. If you feel extra bold, and if the dress is see-through, layer it on a pair of trousers, like Olivia Palermo. and pair with a smart pair of ankle boots or stilettos.
Before you go …
